Affinity for iPad vs Procreate: Which Should You Buy? (2026)

By · Published · Updated · Research-based (not yet hands-on tested)

Short answer: As of early November 2026, Affinity for iPad is a free unified App Store download for individuals (Canva login required); core Sketch, Vector, Pixel and Layout studios are included, and Canva AI Studio needs a paid Canva plan. Procreate remains $12.99 one-time (US App Store, checked 5 Nov 2026) with a public no-generative-AI policy. Install Affinity first if you need vectors, photo work or multi-page layout for $0. Buy Procreate if illustration, painting, animation or 3D painting is the job. Many people keep both. Hardware still matters — see our iPad, Pencil and paper-feel guides.

Research-based comparison. Facts from Canva’s Affinity for iPad newsroom post, Procreate’s AI page, the US App Store (Procreate $12.99 on 5 Nov 2026), and contemporary launch coverage. We have not timed identical artwork in both apps for this page. Confirm live App Store price and system requirements for your iPad.

In early November 2026 Canva shipped Affinity for iPad as a free unified app (Canva newsroom). That changes the old “pay once for Affinity Photo/Designer vs pay once for Procreate” framing. This page is the buy decision, then the hardware that makes either app pleasant: best iPad for Affinity, Pencil Pro vs USB-C, paper-feel protectors.

What free Affinity for iPad actually gives you

Canva’s pitch: one file from sketch → vector → photo → print-ready layout, built for Apple Pencil (pressure, tilt, barrel roll, squeeze, hover). Core studios are free; AI features need Canva premium. That makes Affinity the default first install for anyone who might need vectors or photo tools later.

Caveats (honesty): you must sign in with Canva. Some desktop-only tools are not on iPad at launch — check Canva’s help/App Store notes for your workflow. Older Affinity V2 iPad apps are a separate lineage; plan file migration carefully.

Where Procreate still wins

Procreate is not trying to be a design suite. Brush feel, animation assist, time-lapse and 3D painting remain the usual reasons illustrators stay. The no generative AI policy is a hard product line, not a footnote — if that ethics stance matters to you, it is a concrete differentiator.

Decision tree

  1. Need vectors, RAW photo work, or multi-page layout on iPad? → Affinity.
  2. Only painting / comics / lettering / short animation? → Procreate.
  3. Hate creating another account? → Procreate avoids Canva login; Affinity requires it.
  4. Want zero generative AI in the tool? → Procreate by policy; Affinity free tier can ignore AI, but AI Studio exists on paid Canva.
  5. Choosing hardware next? → More RAM helps Affinity photo/layout files; Pencil Pro if you want hover/squeeze (Pencil guide); paper-feel film only if you want tooth.

Hardware that matters more than the $12.99

Software is cheap or free here. The iPad and Pencil are the real spend — which is why our cluster exists:

Frequently asked questions

Is Affinity free on iPad now?

Yes, for individuals. Canva’s Nov 2026 newsroom post says Affinity for iPad is in the App Store with core Sketch, Vector, Pixel and Layout tools free for individuals. A free Canva account is required to use the app. Confirm on the live App Store listing.

Does Procreate still cost money?

Yes. The US App Store listed Procreate at $12.99 one-time when checked on 5 November 2026. Regional prices vary. There is no subscription for the core app.

Does either app use generative AI?

Procreate’s AI page states no generative AI, and that they do not access your art by design. Affinity for iPad offers optional Canva AI Studio tools (expand, upscale, background tools and similar) with a Canva premium plan; free Affinity users can ignore AI entirely.

I already own Affinity Photo/Designer V2 for iPad. Do I need the new app?

The new Affinity for iPad is the unified v3-style app. Launch coverage notes that files made in the new app cannot be opened in the older V2 iPad apps. Check Canva’s migration notes before you move active client files.

What iPad and Pencil should I use?

Both apps support a wide range of modern iPads. Affinity’s heavy photo and multi-page files benefit from more RAM; Pencil Pro unlocks hover and squeeze on supported models. See our Affinity iPad and Pencil guides, and add a paper-feel film only if you want more tooth.
