Best Paper-Feel Screen Protectors for Affinity on iPad (2026)

By · Published · Updated · Research-based (not yet hands-on tested)

Short answer: If you draw or retouch in Affinity on iPad and hate the glass “ice skate” feel, a paper-feel film adds friction. Paperlike 3 (official 2-pack listed around $49.99 / €44 on paperlike.com, checked 5 Nov 2026) is the brand that invented the category, with a refined Nanodots surface and Butterfly install. Cheaper Amazon alternatives (ESR, Bellemond, Relandgo and similar) often feel more abrasive and can dull the display more. Expect some Pencil tip wear on any textured film, slightly reduced clarity, and a learning curve on install. Pair with the right Pencil — see our Affinity Pencil guide.

Research-based buyer’s guide. Specs and prices are from manufacturer pages and App/retail listings checked 5 November 2026. We have not side-by-side tested Paperlike 3 against ESR/Bellemond on Affinity for this article. Expect some tip wear and a clarity trade-off on any textured film.

Affinity for iPad (Photo 2 and Designer 2) is a serious creative stack — see best iPad for Affinity and Apple Pencil Pro vs USB-C for Affinity. The missing tactile piece for many illustrators is friction. Bare glass is fast but slippery. Paper-feel protectors add tooth so strokes feel closer to paper.

Who should buy a paper-feel film?

Buy one if you sketch, letter, mask with the Pencil, or take handwritten notes and find glass too slick.

Skip it if you mainly do pixel-level photo retouching, colour grading, or UI mockups where maximum clarity and zero tip wear matter more than texture.

Affinity-specific tips

  1. Pick the Pencil first. Hover and barrel roll need Pencil Pro on a compatible iPad — details in Pencil Pro vs USB-C for Affinity.
  2. Brush size discipline. Extra friction can make you press harder; start with slightly larger brushes than on glass.
  3. Keep a spare tip. Textured films consume tips; Affinity sessions that run hours will show it.
  4. Photo vs Designer. Designer illustration and concept art benefit most from tooth. Photo healing/cloning often feels better on glass.
  5. Case clearance. Paperlike says sub-0.095 mm films work with Magic Keyboard and typical cases; thick aftermarket glass can fight some cases.

How we’ll test

TODO: hands-on. Install Paperlike 3 and one budget film on the same iPad model. Score Affinity Pencil feel (hatching, pressure, eraser), tip wear after a fixed stroke count, and side-by-side clarity photos. Publish dates and photos.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a paper-feel protector for Affinity?

No. Affinity Photo 2 and Designer 2 work fine on bare glass. Buy one only if you want more Pencil friction for drawing, masking or handwriting. Photo retouchers who pinch-zoom a lot sometimes prefer bare glass for clarity.

Does Paperlike work with Apple Pencil Pro and USB-C?

Paperlike says Paperlike 3 is designed for all Apple Pencils and has also been tested with Logitech Crayon. Hover and squeeze on Pencil Pro still depend on your iPad model, not the film.

Will it wear down my Pencil tip?

Yes, to some degree. Paperlike itself says all textured surfaces cause wear and that customers typically replace tips about every six months. Budget sandpaper-style films can wear tips faster.

Does it make the screen look worse?

Textured films bend light. Paperlike claims Nanodots keep rainbow/refraction effects lower than conventional matte films; independent reviewers still note a slight haze vs bare glass. Expect a clarity trade-off.

Is there a real Paperlike affiliate programme?

Yes. Paperlike publicly lists an affiliate programme (Rewardful) at roughly 10% commission. Links below use AffLink with a TODO until our tag is live.

Can I remove a paper-feel film for photo editing?

Stick-on films like Paperlike are meant to stay on (packs include a spare). If you switch often between drawing and colour-critical photo work, look at removable systems such as Astropad Rock Paper Pencil, or keep a second iPad / bare-glass spare. We have not tested RPP for this article.
