Apple Pencil Pro vs USB-C for Affinity: Which Should You Buy?
By Balwant Singh Rawat · Published · Updated · Research-based (not yet hands-on tested)
Research-based comparison. We have not yet drawn the same Affinity file with both Pencils. Feature lists and prices come from Apple and Canva pages linked below, checked 5 November 2026. Prices change; confirm on apple.com for your country before you buy.
Canva released Affinity for iPad on 2 November 2026. The app is free for individuals, so the stylus is one of the few things you still pay for. This page answers the hardware question: Pencil Pro or USB-C? For which iPad to buy first, see our Best iPad for Affinity guide.
What does Affinity for iPad actually use from Apple Pencil?
Canva says Affinity for iPad is “built for Apple Pencil and touch” and that Apple Pencil pressure, tilt, barrel roll, squeeze and hover all work
(Canva newsroom). In Sketch Studio, pressure and tilt affect every mark; squeeze and barrel roll are the Pro-only gestures for tool switching and brush orientation.
That matters because Apple’s own comparison table does not give the USB-C Pencil pressure sensitivity, squeeze, barrel roll, double-tap, haptics, wireless charging or Find My (Apple: Choose the right Apple Pencil).

Which iPads work with which Pencil?
Apple Pencil Pro (Apple Support, published 27 October 2026, plus Apple’s shop select page):
- iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch (M4 and M5)
- iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch (M2, M3 and M4)
- iPad mini (A17 Pro); Apple’s shop select page also lists iPad mini (A20 Pro). Apple Support’s compatibility page currently names only A17 Pro for the mini — check both pages and Settings → General → About before you buy.
Apple Pencil (USB-C) adds older USB-C iPads that Pencil Pro does not support, including:
- iPad (A16) and iPad (10th generation)
- iPad Air (4th and 5th generation)
- iPad mini (6th generation)
- Older 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro generations listed on Apple Support
The base iPad (A16) — our budget pick in the Affinity iPad guide — cannot use Pencil Pro at all. If that is your tablet, USB-C is the modern option.
Older Affinity-compatible iPads (iPad 7th–9th generation, iPad Air 3rd generation, iPad mini 5th generation) need Apple Pencil (1st generation), often with Apple’s USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter on the A16/10th-gen iPad. They never get Pro gestures.
When is Apple Pencil Pro worth the extra money for Affinity?
Buy Pencil Pro if:
- Your iPad is on the Pro-compatible list above, and
- You will sketch, paint or do pressure-sensitive masking in Affinity (or Procreate, Fresco and similar apps)
The $50 / £50 / €60 gap buys pressure, squeeze, barrel roll, haptics, Find My and magnetic wireless charging. For Affinity specifically, Canva’s feature list lines up with those Pro extras.
Buy the USB-C Pencil if:
- You mainly do layout, text and basic vectors, or
- Your iPad does not support Pencil Pro (base iPad A16 is the common case), or
- You want the lowest cost stylus that still has tilt and hover
We have not timed strokes or measured palm rejection differences yet. The decision above follows Apple’s feature matrix and Canva’s stated Affinity support, not a hands-on score.
How does this compare for Procreate and other drawing apps?
The same pressure gap applies outside Affinity. Reviews that compare the two Pencils (for example Engadget and Stuff) treat Pencil Pro as the creative choice and USB-C as the note-taking / budget choice. If you already own a 2nd-generation Pencil on a compatible older Air or Pro, keep it for drawing — it has pressure — rather than “upgrading” to USB-C.
How we’ll test
TODO: hands-on results. Draw the same Affinity Sketch Studio brush stroke ladder and a short illustration with Pencil Pro and USB-C on an M-series iPad; record whether pressure is available, whether squeeze opens the Affinity tool palette, and barrel-roll brush orientation. Add screenshots, iPadOS / Affinity versions and the test date. Change handsOn: true only after testing.

Frequently asked questions
Does Affinity for iPad support Apple Pencil Pro features?
Yes. Canva’s Affinity for iPad launch post says the app supports Apple Pencil pressure, tilt, barrel roll, squeeze and hover. Barrel roll and squeeze are Pencil Pro features.
Does the Apple Pencil (USB-C) have pressure sensitivity?
No. Apple’s official Apple Pencil comparison table lists pressure sensitivity for Pencil Pro and leaves it blank for the USB-C Pencil. Tilt and hover are supported on both.
Will Pencil Pro work with the base iPad (A16)?
No. Apple’s shop and Support pages do not list the iPad (A16) for Pencil Pro. That model uses Apple Pencil (USB-C), or Apple Pencil (1st generation) with the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter.
How much more does Pencil Pro cost?
On Apple’s stores, checked 5 November 2026: US $129 vs $79 (a $50 gap); UK £129 vs £79; Germany €149 vs €89. Prices on Amazon and other retailers can differ.
Does Affinity work with older Apple Pencil models?
Affinity runs on older iPads that only take Apple Pencil (1st generation), such as the iPad 7th–9th generation and iPad Air 3rd generation. Those models cannot use Pencil Pro or the USB-C Pencil. Confirm your model on Apple’s Pencil compatibility page before you buy.
Is Pencil Pro worth it if I mostly do layout, not drawing?
Probably not. Pressure, squeeze and barrel roll matter most in Sketch Studio and brush work. For page layout, text and basic vector paths, the USB-C Pencil’s precision, tilt and hover are usually enough.
